The Death of the Funnel and the Rise of the Agentic Loop

Why Agent-Focused Retention Will Be 2026’s Real Growth Story

If you feel like the traditional marketing funnel is breaking, you’re right.

Earlier this week, the IAB released its 2026 Outlook Study (https://www.iab.com/insights/2026-outlook/), and the numbers confirm a strategic sea change. While customer acquisition is still a priority, its dominance has dropped by 10 points year-over-year. And the focus on driving repeat purchases has nearly doubled since 2024.  This has huge implications for how businesses are allocating their marketing spend.

Diving deeper, it’s the details around this retention drive that should be keeping CMOs up at night. We’ve spent a decade obsessed with the first click. But according to the latest industry data, the most valuable customer you’ll acquire this year might not even be human. We are moving from manual segmentation to agentic marketing. While the report mentions "...the increasing use of agentic AI in shaping how marketing decisions are planned, activated, and optimized." it doesn't talk about the role of AI agents in the consumer shopping journey. And that will be critical.

The Shift from Attribution to Autonomy

For years, a substantial focus of marketing analytics was on attribution: trying to determine which channels get credit for the sale, and shifting spend accordingly to optimize future results. In 2026, that conversation is becoming obsolete. With the launch of platforms like AgenticOS and OptiGenie this month, we are seeing the rise of autonomous “incrementality engines”.

Instead of marketers manually planning experiments, the newest systems are self-tuning. They don't just report that a customer bought something; they predict when that customer’s personal AI agent is about to go on a shopping mission and can intervene with the right signal.

That means that if your analytics strategy is still based on just a backward look at last month's spend, you are falling behind. Here is how the C-suite is rethinking the stack this week:

The IAB is forecasting a 9.5% growth in ad spend.  But it isn't going toward more of the same. It’s going to go towards the infrastructure of automation. Because we aren't just marketing to people anymore; we are marketing to the algorithms that will increasingly serve them in the future.

Is your data stack ready to talk to an AI agent, or are you still stuck trying to convince a human to click a banner?  What are your thoughts on the transition to agentic measurement?  Love to hear them in the comments.
